Army National Guard Lieutenant Colonel and Battalion Commander Career Advice

The purpose of this article is to help you get selected for battalion command in the Army National Guard. For purposes of this example, suppose your goal is to retire from the Army National Guard as a battalion commander with 20-21 years of military service officers. This example is tailored to the logistics manager (because that is what I have), but regardless of your industry, your requirements will be very similar.

Here is what you should do in each year of service.

• 16-20 years: pin on the LTC. Spend one year brigade XO, then look for battalion command positions. Sign up for the Army War College. Get selected as battalion and spend 18-24 months in the job. Upon completion of battalion command, filing retirement paperwork and begin the transition to civilian life.

• 10-15 years: Serve as the chief operations officer for the grants, Battalion Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer. The complete intermediate level education (formerly CGSC) and get selected for promotion to lieutenant colonel.

• 2-4 years: Serve as an officer of the Executive and / or Battalion Staff Officer. Sign captain career course and get promoted to captain.

• Years 0-2: Serve as a platoon leader and graduate from officer basic course. Get promoted to lieutenant.
