Career Advice - Career Change Over 40 - Is it Too Late?

Is it too late to change careers more than 40? There was a time when it might be true, and everyone gives career advice to tell you to stay where you were. But when it comes to jobs, things have changed dramatically for everyone, although some employers are a little slow to catch on, smart, and they are hiring older people.

Why so many changes? You already know about the economy and the impact that has on the job. Another important factor is the change in population. More people are living longer and many people have fewer children. So, this means that in most Western countries, the population ages. And, significantly, there are as many young people to take their place in the labor market.

So, what does this mean for you? If you are 40 or more years, the first thing to understand is that your life is likely to be a little longer than you expect. But you probably already realize that one out! You know you will not be retiring any time soon.

With a lot of people who live to 100 these days, that means about 35 or 40 years past the usual retirement age. And if you have a private income, a pension fund or your children become incredibly wealthy, it means you have to support all those extra years.

This information allows you to see a career change into a completely new light. If you're 40 and will now have to work until you're 80, you have what is whole life still ahead of you.

There are many positive things about changing careers in midlife. For one thing, you have 20 years of experience, which you learned a lot. Do you have skills that can be used in many different business situations and know what you are good in and enjoy doing.

It will be easier for you to choose a new career based on interests and abilities. When you were in their twenties, some careers may have held appeal for you, but you had no experience of a copy of your choice. Now you can do. There are also challenges involved in changing careers at 40 or more.

You may have to go back to college, which can be expensive and if you've been away from teaching for a long time, probably wondering how you will cope. And of course, you could find yourself in a classroom with a bunch of 18-year-olds. But you probably will not be the only mature student in the class and you will find that colleges are well equipped to deal with students who are away from education for some time.
